Melancholic IncorporationOlivier Theysken’s Fall–Winter 1998–1999 collection featured a translucent white polo-necked body stocking traced with a pattern of red veins and arteries that ran from a red lace appliquéd heart over the right breast and trailed away towards the edges of the body like the wintry branches of a tree silhouetted against a pale sky. Photographed against a solid grotto wall of human skull and bones, the model’s white face make-up, dark panda eyes and emaciated frame, with her wilting pose, combined to suggest an intense fascination with the juxtaposition of death and extreme youth.
